Dexter Gene McDaniel II, 35 years old with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Finance from Cal-State Los Angeles. He currently works as a commercial underwriter in Costa Mesa, CA. Dexter is a native of Inglewood, California; Dexter started reshaping his physique approximately 14 years ago with the anticipation of one day competing on a pro level. Needless, to say this journey has been challenging and rewarding as a paraplegic since the age of 19.
On Friday July 31, 2003 I was a victim of a violent crime that left me paralyzed. I was shot 3 times; right shoulder blade, left arm and face.
I began lifting weights in 2005 as a result of seeing a close friend put on size after working on consistently. This made me believe that I could look that way if not better.
I was pushed by another close friend who is currently in pursuit to become pro in the men's physique division. I never felt confident enough to get on stage until late 2018. And once I had the confidence, I was determined to touch the stage.
I leaned on my 2 coaches for direction and help with my workouts, diet and posing. Once I had the blueprint for success it was up to me to put the work in and out work everyone else.
The self-drive to be as big and strong as I can be while my body can still endure the grind. Life is short so why not test my limits physically with the reward of mental and physical gains.
Don’t be afraid to try new things and don’t be afraid to ask for help when needed. And just know that the gym journey is about trial and error so do your research and do what works for you.
